'Potter' Passes 'Rings'

With help from a strong opening in China, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 reached its final major milestone this weekend. On Sunday, it passed The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King to move up to third place on the all-time worldwide (domestic plus foreign) chart with $1.134 billion. It only trails James Cameron's Avatar ($2.78 billion) and Titanic ($1.84 billion) but by insurmountable margins.

Deathly Hallows Part 2 earned an estimated $61.8 million from 61 markets, which included a very roughly-estimated $25.5 million debut in China. That's by-far the biggest Chinese opening ever for a Harry Potter movie. The movie's foreign total reached $791.1 million, and it will move past Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides in the next day or two to claim third place on the all-time foreign chart. It should finish with around $900 million overseas, which will push its worldwide total past $1.25 billion.

'Transformers' Becomes Tenth Billion-Dollar Movie Ever; 'Potter' Hits Another Worldwide Milestone

Transformers: Dark of the Moon joined Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 in the $1 billion worldwide club yesterday. This marked the first time in history that three movies from the same year, much less the same season, all reached that mark, and it spoke volumes about the expanding nature of the foreign market as well as the continued popularity of 3D outside of America. The third Transformers is the tenth movie ever to earn $1 billion worldwide, and it moved past The Dark Knight to rank ninth on the all-time chart.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 also hit a major worldwide milestone yesterday: with $1.038 billion, it passed Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides's $1.033 billion to become the highest-grossing movie of 2011. It now ranks sixth on the all-time chart, and it looks guaranteed to pass The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King's $1.119 billion by the end of the weekend to move up to third place. Its foreign-only total rose to $713.2 million, making it the fifth movie ever to earn over $700 million overseas.

'Potter' Beats 'Transformers' to $1 Billion

Transformers: Dark of the Moon's two-week head start couldn't hold off Harry Potter's record-breaking pace: Deathly Hallows Part 2 passed $1 billion worldwide (domestic plus foreign) on Sunday, while Transformers still has a few days left before it arrives at that coveted milestone.

Deathly Hallows Part 2 hit $1 billion on its 19th day in theaters, which tied Avatar's record for fastest to reach that level. With a $1.008 billion total, Potter ranked eighth on all-time worldwide chart, ahead of The Dark Knight but behind Alice in Wonderland. With China opening next weekend, Potter's poised to ultimately take third place from The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King ($1.12 billion).

'Harry Potter' Hits $900M Worldwide in Record Time

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 crossed the $900 million worldwide mark on Wednesday, its 15th day in release. That made Harry's last stand the fastest movie ever to reach that milestone, breaking Avatar's 18-day record.

    'Potter' Obliterates Foreign Records

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 outpaced even the most generous prognostications this weekend, setting a new weekend record with an incredible $314 million at the foreign box office. That's 20 percent up on the previous record-holder, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and 32 percent up on Half-Blood Prince's series record. Including its stunning domestic take, Deathly Hallows Part 2 also eclipsed Half-Blood Prince to set the worldwide opening weekend record with an astronomical $483.2 million. That improved to $542.2 million through Monday ($18 million domestic plus $41 million overseas), and the movie set a new record by passing the half-billion dollar mark in just six days.
